A Giant Leap Forward
Wouldn’t it save you so much time if you could make your journeys by rail or plane by just jumping onto the train or aircraft whilst it was still moving at high speed, when it passed nearby where you lived? No need for it to slow down, or land, wait for people to board and then get up to speed again? You would save all that extra time and trouble of travelling to the train station, or the airport, going through security and queuing up to board? And whilst you were travelling at high speed wouldn’t it be fantastic if you could see much more detail in the scenery you were passing by, or flying over?
Whilst this is all wishful thinking at present in the world of travel – in the Business Intelligence arena Dimensional Insight has made a comparable leap in the world of data access, with its latest release of Diver BI – Diver 7.0 Platform.
That sounds like a grandiose claim – but it’s really not! The huge speed advantages of Diver 7.0 with its Spectre Builder are gained in a variety of ways – and all can be understood using this (I’ll admit a little cheesy) transport analogy.
No More Time Wasted Getting to the Airport
First of all, building a Diver data model or cBase as it’s called in Diver 7.0, cuts out a huge amount of the time that was spent on manual interventions by developers to design the old models – because in cBases there are no limits on the number of dimensions! So now all that effort that went into optimising the model design or creating canister models is just no longer required. In fact you can build just one cBase to replace many old models. That’s like removing all the steps in getting to the aircraft or train – including the dreaded security check.
No More Queues
Secondly, the time actually spent building this one cBase is a tiny fraction of the time spent building equivalent models. In tests we have run on customer data, the cBase build time has been just 0.2% of the equivalent model build time – and takes up only 9% of the space. And this means that in your nightly build tasks all the queueing of jobs can be reduced dramatically or even have no queue– like avoiding the queues to get on the aircraft.
Jumping in at High Speed
Thirdly, the way I described you jumping onto the train or aircraft at high speed without having to wait for the train to stop or the plane to land? Well that’s like how you access your data from the cBase once it’s built! With the latest in-memory access techniques, Diver 7.0 allows you to open complex multi-tabbed reports in split seconds – rather than the sometimes minutes it took to open these in older versions.
Once the Cbase is in memory, it’s as though you’re jumping into it at high speed, all the dives are there waiting. In the past every time you opened a complex report, it had to be opened from scratch – there was nothing held in memory.
And finally, as an added bonus you get much more data in the cBase than you could ever get in a model – so that’s where you get to see the more detailed information – or the detailed scenery at high speeds.

If all this sounds just too good to be true, please get in touch with us and we can demonstrate Diver 7.0 Spectre cBases through a webinar.
Or better still – just get into a tele-transporter and beam yourself over to our offices! Well that’s something we’re still working on:-)
